The village of Saladan, the northernmost point of Ko Lanta and the easternmost suburb of Gothenburg, seen from Ko Lanta Noi. It is a moot question to ask what came first, the chicken or the egg; similarly one can not say with certainty who are the original Lanta islanders, the sea gypsies or the Chinese. Whereas it is now pretty much confirmed that the Chinese have arrived about a hundred years ago, having recently celebrated their centennial in the old administrative center of Lanta pier, the origins of the sea gypsies are somewhat more obscure. Although they are scattered around various places along the west coast of Thailand, their language leans more towards the Malay than the Thai, yet they are certainly not muslims, their religion is a strange animist, superstitious belief.
